GUADALUPE CENTRAL PARK
Guadalupe, California

Project Background:
As one of the 112 Statewide Park Program, Round 4 grant award winners, the design for the 1.5-acre park is heavily rooted in community based planning, and will feature amenities selected by Guadalupe residents including a dog park, a skate park, a 1/2 basketball court, a bocce ball court, adult exercise equipment, game board tables, tables with small BBQ pits, a small playground, a public restroom, lighting throughout park, art in the park, accessible sidewalks and paths, and new drought tolerant native and adapted species landscaping.

Client:
City of Guadalupe

Design:
The design of the park is inspired by the landform, character, and ecology of the nearby Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve. This is most apparent in the landform created to shelter the picnic/BBQ areas. This landform takes direct reference from dune geomorphology and will create windbreaks to protect the spaces from the near constant onshore winds that typify Guadalupe. Other dune references will be apparent in the newly repainted water tower, public art, playground surfacing, the plant palette, and a cast-in-place “dune wall” that abstracts the dune form into the edge of the skatepark. To date, PCLD has continued the project’s commitment to community engagement, through public workshops and presentations. The centerpiece of this effort involved close collaboration with SITE Design Group to gain community input for the design of the 5,700 square foot skatepark, which features terrain for all skateboarding experience levels. The project is entering the construction document phase, with bidding anticipated in early 2024 and construction beginning mid-late 2024.
